Time is a valuable commodity, and when you have kids it’s even more so. My reading time lately has been reduced to the brief window between getting into bed and falling asleep. And by brief, I mean 5 minutes or less.
I had been getting back into my reading groove but I had to put it aside for a bit. Rowan had a skin infection and we had to adjust his feeds to fit around the medicine which really upset the routine we had gotten into and impacted on his growth. Now he’s playing catch up and growing like a weed. Which is great, but it also meant a return to night feeds and back to having very little energy for things like reading.
It’s made me very picky about which books I spend my time on. I don’t want to waste a week on a slow starter when I could find comfort in an old favourite. I need something that’s fast-paced and easy to follow. So I won’t be tackling any epic fantasy anytime soon.
It makes me miss the old days when I could spend the whole day reading and stay up until 3am because it’s just that good. Now I’m lucky if I can get in a few pages before Luna tries to pull the book from my hands. For now I’ll have to settle for my weekly half-hour soak in the tub to enjoy my books fully, even then I still have a toddler offering me duckies.
How do you fit reading into Mum life?
